Fishing Memories - Indiana Carp Fishing When I Was a Kid

Don't you remember as a kid, you just got out whenever you could with a handful of night crawlers you'd dug up, and a bag of Wheaties you'd snuck out of your Mom's kitchen? She was really mad when she found out you'd dug up her flowers!

At the time I was just a kid, and my Dad didn't mind me exploring through his tackle box and borrowing a few good hooks. Once in a while he'd even sneak in a candy bar or snack for me.

We would we'd ride our bikes about three miles and fish below the dam at Morse reservoir in Indiana. There is a little dirt trail to follow down, and then you can work yourself on down the bank. Use to slide down that spillway when I was a kid. Just don't let Indiana DNR catch you doing it! lol

We would get to where we wanted, find a broken branch to use for a Y stick, and kick back on the bank with our Zebco 33s, bait our hooks, turn on the AM radio and wait for a bite.

Once in a while we would wade out and get on top of big boulders sticking above the water. Water was clear and from top of these boulders you could watch schools of carp, catfish, and shad moving up and down the banks.

We saw lots of other anglers who would get on top of these boulders and snag for fish. Heavy weighted treble hooks moved into the front of a school of carp would yield some hefty fish from anglers who seemed to have a talent for it.

The night crawlers would catch a few good channel cats every now and then, but just to have fun and a blast we would make a good Wheatie ball?

It's a shame how easy we forget those childhood memories. Anymore today we have rod beepers and lights, boilies and pack bait, hair rigs, and all the other bells and whistles.

Why does it seem so hard to get back to the basic's? Lot's of us now go to Indiana pay lakes or stocked fishing lakes just to catch a good carp, while our rivers and lakes get very little fishing pressure from carp anglers.

I'll also mention that I do not recommend Indy Lakes pay lakes and campgrounds in Indianapolis. Some anglers have been very dis-appointed with the fishing in these lakes, and the pools they run for catfish and carp. Even as a kid I would never catch much from here.

It seems like I've spend lots and lots more money these days than I used to, and have less fun! That just doesn't make good sense to me!

Next time I go fishing I think I'll just forget the pay lakes, grab a bag of full Wheaties, some old spark plugs for weights, and a few good hooks. You'll find me down on the White river, or maybe an old gravel pit, but where-ever you do find me, it's for sure I'll be having fun!!

Good Fishing Everyone!!
