Mining for Herkimer Diamonds

Two summers ago my wife and I decided to take our oldest grandson who was fourteen at the time on a summer road trip to Herkimer, New York to mine for Herkimer Diamonds. We rented a "cabin" at the Herkimer KOA Campgrounds, gathered some hammers and stone chisels and off we went.

Kids Ball Pits & Accessories

Herkimer is within a days drive of our home so I heard only a few "Are we there yet? " questions. If you have read any of my other car trip travel stories you know I stop when tired or hungry or if someone needs to stretch their legs a little. Arriving at the campground in early afternoon we were surprised to find the cabin was already cleaned and ready to go. After signing in at the main KOA office, the staff showed us where to go and very graciously explained all the things available to see and do in the area. Our cabin was only a two minute drive from the office and we had lucked out and gotten an end unit in a row of five or six cabins. All the cabins face the same way in a semi-circle over looking the valley below. Each cabin has it 's own parking space right next to the cabin making unloading the car quite easy.

Kids Ball Pits & Accessories

Coming and going to each cabin did not disturb the others in their cabins at all. The cabin was far better then we pictured. A really neat front sitting porch with a double swing, a living room area with a futon couch/bed, a small kitchenette with a microwave, sink and small cook top and fridge, table and chairs for four and a TV. A full sparkling clean bathroom and an adjoining room with two bunk beds. The cabin had it's own heater and AC unit as well. In front of each cabin there was a raised pedestal barbecue grille and a large fire pit with nice big flat stones for sitting on at night. Since the day was quite hot and the hour growing late we decided to use the camp ground swimming pool until dinner time. The mines close at 5PM so we opted for starting out early the next day to get our diamonds. The pool area was again very well kept and clean. An adjoining arcade kept our grandson quite content for a few hours between the pool and playing the games. That night we chose to eat out, well actually my wife decided that, and went to one of the local restaurants for dinner. Stopping at the camp store we had stocked up on drinks and snacks when we checked in. After dinner we took a short ride to see what was in the area and to purchase some firewood for the fire pit and of course some marshmallows and Graham crackers for Smores.

Upon returning to the cabin we made a nice fire in the fire pit and, made Smores. Looking at the millions of stars you can see there in the Adirondacks is a pure delight. No light pollution there to ruin the views for sure. By ten or so we were beat and decided to turn in. My grandson and I chose to try the bunk beds and my wife took the futon. Those bunk beds were so comfortable it was amazing. I slept like a log and I very seldom do. In the morning after some coffee, tea and cereal we headed out to the mine store at about 9 AM or so. There are hundreds of things to see there as well as many beautiful samples of the Herkimer diamonds. They have a water sluice set up for kids to pan for some semi-precious stones but is is strictly for kids enjoyment not adults. The store rents the tools you could need but be sure to wear good closed toed shoes, and a hat and gloves. The sun can get mighty hot in the quarry at mid day.

A cooler with ice and drinks is a great idea as well. They do have refreshments available. The place goes out of it's way to accommodate their visitors every need. You can drive from the store to the mine and park quite close by. A short two minute walk and your in the quarry area. At first it is a lot to take in. People are all over hammering away at piles of rock, others are walking the lower areas looking for lost diamonds missed by others (and you can find plenty of them and never swing a hammer) and still others up on the rock face with tarps setup against the sun and working hard to remove large sections of the yet unseen rock. You pick your own area to work and set about looking for the diamonds. The diamonds are found inside chambers in the rock formed a half billion years ago under the Cambrian sea.

There may be only a few crystals in a small pocket but there can be thousands in a larger one. They are way cool to find and come in many sizes. They are really a crystal with shiny sides of eighteen facets and two pointed ends. Small ones can be crystal clear and the larger ones are translucent. Some grow piggy backed on others, some stand alone. It is pretty hard work breaking the rocks and we damaged a few three inch steel chisels during our stay there. When you break open a chunk of rock and find a crystal it really is great fun. We mined for two and a half days that week, did the museum, and then used the pool and did some local antiquing as well. We will return to that campground in a heartbeat when we get a chance. On our way home we stopped at Howe Caverns, an excellent local Indian museum and of course any other tourist attractions we could find. My Grandson had a ball as he had never been to any of those places and still keeps his Herkimer Diamonds in his keepsake cigar box.

Favorite BMX Racing Training Workouts of Olympic Medalists

Favorite workouts of Olympic Medalists Mike Day and Jill Kintner:

Kids Ball Pits & Accessories

With their personal coach Greg Romero

Kids Ball Pits & Accessories

When I was coaching and preparing Mike and Jill side by side for 12 months leading up to the games we had simply had fun everyday. Either way, my goal with their training was to keep it interesting and having them feel good about it. This month I'm going to touch on a few protocols that both Jill and Mike liked that had them leading up to eventual medal winning performances at the Olympic games!

I will touch on one off the bike and one on the bike training protocol for each athlete!

Jill Kintner off the bike exercises: Dynamic warm up.

If any of you have had the opportunity to watch Jill at a race then you might have seen her in the parking lot doing lots of funny callisthenic looking exercises near the pits or the rental car. What she is doing is what we like to call a dynamic warm up. First off, you're going to need some regular athletic shoes. The first thing we like to do is open the hips so we start with a knee to chest walk. You take a step forward and with both hands grab below the knee and bring it to your chest and then immediately repeat on the next step.

This opens up hip extensors and lower back. The forward lunge is the next exercise yet targeting the antagonist hip muscles. This time it's the hip flexors. Simply take a nice step (approximately 5 shoe lengths in front of you) and while keeping your upper torso vertically straight, bend at the back knee and follow with the front, and do this movement slowly. This is a nice dynamic stretch of the hip flexor in which will allow you to pedal efficiently! Jill says "If I can only do 2 warm up exercises then I would focus on the hip muscles so I can pedal without inhibition".

Mike Day off the bike exercises: Plyometrics

Let's face it, BMX is power and if you can pick one exercise that can hit all the components of power then it would be doing plyometrics. Plyometrics are basically jumping on your feet using your body weight only. The best exercises for kids are simply doing jump rope or skips and hops. This is perfectly fine and safe and they do this kind of stuff all day during recess at school. As long as they're not jumping off 4-foot high boxes or ladders then their joints and tendons will be fine. They can first start off with jump rope skipping for 10-20 quick jumps. Mike's favorite is the jump rope because it warms him up, hitting ankle joints, knee joints and warming up his wrists, elbows and shoulders. Then once he is ready he likes to move on to Jump Squats.

Simply place both feet shoulder width apart, keeping the upper torso vertically straight, push your hips back followed by a bend at the knees, lowering yourself to about 45 degrees and simply counter with an explosive jump as high as you can. The key is to take off through the ball of your feet and land on the ball of your feet with a nice slight bend in the knees and hips. You can do this one at a time or rapidly. Mike likes to do them one at a time, reset and focus for height. Mike says, "I'll do the jump rope 3 sets for 20 skips and then jump squats 3 sets of 5 jumps, and then I am ready to train in the gym or ride the bike".

Jill Kintner on the bike: Stand Start easy gear sprints.

In the past 5 years while racing Mountain Bikes, Jill never worked on explosive sprint power from a dead start. In BMX she came to find that it was necessary to give herself a chance down the first straight so she can have a chance at a medal. Her favorite sprint session was doing stand start easy gear sprints. I designed this exercise with an emphasis to program pure sprint acceleration out of the gate. We used flat pedals so that it was 100% focus on down stroke and we used an easy gear so that she was forced to accelerate it fast. "I love these so much I had a dedicated flat pedaled easy gear bike set up at the Olympics that I would use as a warm up between rounds of qualifying" Jill says.

What you do is gear down 1 or 2 teeth easier than race gear and change your pedals to flats. On a flat open parking lot with no cars around, take 2 cones, one for a start point and one for the needing point. You can mark of the distance by placing one down and then pedaling from the start cone to the ending cone. Jill liked to do these with approximately 7 full cranks. How to do the sprint: Standing up in the gate start position with cranks level, approach the start cone slowly and then explode keeping the front wheel down and straight.

Make sure to minimize the bend at the hips and try to stay tall, focusing on the extension of each pedal stroke through the feet. "It's not a hard workout, it's about a quality one, and I love this because when I get on the track I feel explosive out of the gate", Jill says. Do 1 set of 8-10 efforts and rest 3-4 minutes between to recover the ATP energy system. This sprint workout is about neurological programming, not a muscle breakdown. In fact we hardly ever do any training that has an emphasis on muscle breakdown because BMX is about quality power.

Mike Day on the bike: Full Laps.

If you don't have the gas to make a full lap without getting tired, then you're not specifically fit for BMX. "There seems to be an impression that you need major endurance work on a road bike to be fit for BMX, and I haven't touched a road bike all year, I do full laps," Mike says. I say why not? It's very specific, you get the dynamic power component of the jumping and the lactic build up towards the end. This is the perfect training protocol for those who find themselves struggling to get to the finish.

The key with this workout is to keep the intensity just below "all out". What makes this workout work is that it's training your ability to repeat motos at your fullest physical capacity. "Greg always talks about how repeatability is the limiting factor to a good day of racing" Mike laughs, "At first I hated these but then I started to see my racing getting better towards the finals and at the Olympic games, I never felt better" the silver medalist says. The key is intensity, the rest in between the efforts and how many. Mike likes to go out and do 5 full laps at 90% intensity with 10 minutes rest in between. For kids under 16, I would recommend a shorter rest interval of 6-8 minutes as they don't produce lactate acid like the older crowd.

Dog Attack Escape

Do you know how to deal with a vicious dog if ever you need to save yourself or a loved one? Here's how:

Kids Ball Pits & Accessories

A 125 pound dog attacked five-year-old Selena Burks as she played with friends in Alabama on April 8, 2008. She suffered crushed ribs, a punctured lung and liver. An heroic 11-year-old boy kicked the dog away and possibly saved her life.

Kids Ball Pits & Accessories

An elderly woman was walking her little dog when a pit bull suddenly attacked her dog and clamped its jaws around its head. The woman had no luck trying to pry the pit bull's jaws apart and could see her dog dying. So she bit the pit bull's neck as hard as she could. It let go and backed off, but came back to attack the little dog again. The woman bit it again. That's when a neighbor ran up and hit the pit bull with a baseball bat and drove it away.

The Humane Society says children are more likely victims of a dog attack because they behave in ways that dogs find disturbing, like running, yelling or making sudden moves, and less likely to be perceived as dominant because of their small size.

10-year-old Kenny survived a dog attack by a huge Mastiff. As the dog lunged at his throat, Kenny instinctively threw up his arm. The dog latched onto his forearm as Kenny remembered his father's advice, "Plunge your thumb deep into the dog's eye." Kenny burst the dog's eyeball like a grape. The dog released him and fell whimpering to the ground just as Kenny's older brother arrived with a pipe and beat the vicious dog to death.

Usually, a dog's body language indicates it's about to attack by standing still with a stiffly upright tail while barking and snarling. An especially attack-prone dog usually will not back away, and in fact may try to circle around and attack from a different angle.

PASSIVE DEFENSE

Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says that our impulse is to run when threatened by a dog attack. That's the worst response - it triggers the chase instinct in dogs (and knocking down a runner from behind is easy).

Instead, stand still and act calm. Don't stare into its eyes because dogs consider that an aggressive challenge, so just look in its general direction and watch it with your peripheral vision. Oftentimes it will eventually lose interest and wander away.

Make fists so the dog won't bite off a finger and cross your forearms across your chest. Be ready to protect your most vulnerable anatomy - the front of your torso from your groin to your throat - often a dog's primary target. Let the dog sniff you. In a low voice say, "No!" Stay still until the dog leaves. Back away slowly until it's out of sight.

An ultrasonic dog repellent is useless on a vicious dog attack, but pepper spray usually works.

MODERATE DEFENSE

If a dog does attack you, try to "feed" it your jacket, bike equipment, briefcase, or purse as a distraction while you back slowly away toward safety. If you're knocked down or fall, curl into a ball and keep your arms wrapped around your ears, face, and neck (with your hands curled into fists). Try not to scream or roll around.

If a vicious dog has clamped onto you, do not try to wrench yourself free - that'll just add to the damage.

One myth says to use a free hand to grab the dog's jaw and nose, pinning the nostrils shut. It can't breathe with its mouth full and nostrils shut, so must release you. Unfortunately, that'll be a very brief solution - until it immediately resumes its attack. Since a vicious dog can severely injure or even kill you, an aggressive defense may well be necessary.

A second myth says putting your thumb into a dog's mouth and pressing down on its tongue (while curling your fingers into a fist around its jaw) engages the dog's gag reflex making it unable to bite down. However, that may well be very dangerous for your thumb.

AGGRESSIVE DEFENSE: ATTACK THE BEAST!

A passive defense may well be futile, if not deadly. You can strangle an attacking dog by pressing with all your might on the carotid arteries on both frontal sides of its throat (a few inches below its jaw's hinges). Its brain is quickly deprived of blood/oxygen and the dog will go limp within seconds (or die, if held longer). YOU NEED BOTH HANDS with your thumbs pressing while your fingers grasp the back of the dog's neck for leverage.

If you release the limp dog too soon, it will regain consciousness within seconds and perhaps attack again. Thus you may want to first bang its head against a solid surface to knock it out, or break its ribs by ramming its chest with your bent knee, or heel-stomp on its legs to break them so the dog will be less able to attack you further.

In 2002, a stray pit-bull dog attacked a two-year-old Detroit boy and began dragging him down the street. Horrified witnesses tried to intervene but the dog would attack them briefly then resume dragging the child. No police were nearby, six people were hurt, and the child seemed doomed until a passing motorist noticed the commotion, stopped, and shot the dog to death.

If a dog has clamped onto another person or dog, simply use the same grip but now you'll be behind the dog and your thumbs will be on the back of its neck for leverage while your fingertips press on the carotid arteries.

Make sure you press on the carotid arteries on both frontal sides of its throat, rather than pressing on its windpipe in the center of its throat because that merely chokes it (depriving it of oxygen to its lungs) and takes 30-90 long seconds for the now violently convulsing beast to be rendered unconscious (or dead, if held longer).

What if the dog has already clamped onto one of your hands or arms? IF YOU CAN'T USE TWO HANDS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE DOG'S THROAT, try to grab its collar or loose skin to wrestle it to the ground and kneel on its throat. Or, quickest of all, plunge your thumb deep into its eye to burst it! That'll probably stop the dog attack. If not, to most effectively defend yourself, strangle the beast!
